Peter Kappesser MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Germany, he served in the Civil War as a Private in Company B, 149th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee on November 24, 1863. His citation reads simply “Capture of Confederate flag (Bragg’s army)”. His Medal was awarded to him on June 28, 1865. He was one of six 149th New York Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Colonel Henry A. Barnum, Sergeant William H.H. Crosier, Private Philip Goettel, Sergeant John Kiggins, and First Sergeant Norman F. Potter).
