Roger Philip Goad GC, BEM was born on 5th August 1935 in Jutogh, India. He was the son of Ronald William Goad and Daisy Bertha Goad (nee Martin). His father was stationed in India at the time of Roger’s birth as a Staff Sergeant with the 12th Light Battery of the Royal Artillery. The Regiment were stationed in Ambala.

Roger followed his father into the Armed Forces on 2nd September 1953 when he enlisted with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC). While serving with the RAOC in Cyprus, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for IED disposal services. He married Maureen Quigley in 1961 and they had two daughters Sharon and Nicola.
Goad was promoted to Staff Sergeant and subsequently commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the RAOC on the 26th February 1968, promoted Acting Captain on 1st December 1968, and Captain on 26th February 1970. He retired from the RAOC in the early 1970s and joined the Metropolitan Police as an Explosives Officer based at Scotland Yard.
On 29th August 1975, a telephone call was made to the office of a national paper stating that a bomb had been left in a shop doorway in Kensington Street. This information was immediately passed to the police and two patrol officers were sent to the scene. They found a plastic bag in the doorway; one of them examined the bag and saw a pocket watch fixed to the top of the contents by adhesive tape. It was almost certainly a bomb and the officers raised the alarm. The street was taped off and cleared, along with the surrounding buildings. Captain Goad was returning from London after having dealt with a suspect parcel and accepted the call to deal with this device. On his arrival he was briefed by a senior police officer while they walked towards the shop. Some distance from the shop, the officer stopped and Goad went on alone and entered the doorway. He was seen to bend over the bomb and begin to defuse it, when it exploded and killed him instantly.
Goad was posthumously awarded the GC (1st October 1976). He was cremated at the Park Crematorium in Aldershot. His ashes were scattered in Row 181 Plot 79. His medals are not publicly held.
