Samuel Grimshaw MOH

b. 02/03/1840 Jefferson County, Ohio. d. 09/11/1918 Holton, Kansas.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 06/08/1894 Atlanta, Georgia.

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted in the Union Army at Smithfield, Jefferson County, Ohio on August 9, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company B, 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Utoy Creek near Atlanta, Georgia on August 6, 1864, with his citation reading “Saved the lives of some of his comrades, and greatly imperiled his own by picking up and throwing away a lighted shell which had fallen in the midst of the company.” He served through the end of the war, was wounded twice, and received a promotion to Corporal on March 1, 1865 before being honorably mustered out on June 3, 1865 in Washington, DC. His Medal was awarded to him on April 5, 1894.

 

MOH CITATION:

Saved the lives of some of his comrades, and greatly imperiled his own by picking up and throwing away a lighted shell which had fallen in the midst of the company.
