b. 1986 Edinburgh, Scotland.
DATE OF CGC ACTION: 2009 Afghanistan.
Steven Nethery was a 23 year old Marine with 45 Commando, serving out of Arbroath, Scotland, when he was awarded the CGC for his actions in Afghanistan in 2009. He ran, unarmed, under heavy fire, to retrieve wounded colleague, Marine Mark Hendry, who had been shot in the leg. Then he did it again to stop the soldier’s equipment falling into enemy hands. He then carried Mne Hendry 250 yards to the evacuation party. The MoD said: “His repeated bravery undoubtedly saved lives.”
Marine Nethery, from Edinburgh and with 45 Commando, said: “I noticed that someone had been shot in the leg. I gave my weapon to one of the boys and just dashed down to him. I pulled him around the corner of a wall to get out of the line of fire. While he was being treated, I ran back to get his kit before carrying him back. I was just doing my job, doing what we were trained to do, the same as any of the other boys would have done.”
His award was announced in the London Gazette on 11 September 2009.
LOCATION OF MEDAL: WITH RECIPIENT.
