Timothy O’Connor MOH

b. 01/01/1840 Listroy, County Kerry, Ireland. d. 01/01/1868 Chicago, Illinois.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 28/07/1864 near Malvern, Virginia.

American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on January 5, 1865 for his actions as a private with Company E, 1st US Cavalry, US Army, on July 28, 1864, near Malvern, Virginia. Born in Ireland, he came to the US and settled in Chicago, Illinois. He joined the US Army in March 1862 and saw action at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland. Later, he was involved in the 1st Battle of Deep Bottoms, Virginia, where his heroics won him the Medal of Honor. After the war, he was discharged at the rank of sergeant in December 1865 and returned to Chicago, where he died at the age of 28 and was interred at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery. A cenotaph in his honour resides at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia.
