William Brown Mayes MOH

b. 11/08/1837 Marion County, Ohio. d. 16/08/1900 Los Angeles, California.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 15/06/1864 near Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia.

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company K, 11th Iowa Infantry, Union Army. During actions with Confederates at Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, June 15, 1864, a fellow solider had fallen between the battle lines. Private Mayes with one companion, under heavy enemy fire at short range went to the rescue of a wounded comrade and carried him to a place of safety. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 27, 1899.

 

MOH CITATION:

With one companion and under a fierce fire from the enemy at short-range went to the rescue of a wounded comrade who had fallen between the lines and carried him to a place of safety.
