William E Richey MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Athens County Ohio, he served as a Corporal in Company A, 15th Ohio Infantry, Union Army. At the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, September 19, 1863, Confederate forces had advanced to the extreme front of the Union lines. Corporal Richey was between the lines of the combatants when he single-handedly captured a Confederate Major who was armed and mounted. By taking the charging enemy’s commanding officer, Corporal Richey denied the attacking Confederate forces of leadership. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 9, 1893.

While on the extreme front, between the lines of the combatants single-handedly he captured a Confederate major who was armed and mounted.
