Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company G, 149th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, Georgia on July 20, 1864. His citation reads “Severely wounded and ambushed by the enemy, he stripped the colors from the staff and brought them back into the line”. His Medal was awarded to him on January 12, 1892. He was one of six 149th New York Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Colonel Henry A. Barnum, Private Philip Goettel, Private Peter Kappesser, Sergeant John Kiggins, and 1st Sergeant Norman F. Potter). He did not receive his Medal of Honor until 12 January 1892.
Severely wounded and ambushed by the enemy, he stripped the colors from the staff and brought them back into the line.
