William P Hogarty MOH

American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on June 22, 1891 for his actions as a private attached to Battery B, 4th US Artillery, US Army, at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland on on September 17, 1862 and at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13, 1862. He enlisted in the US Army in May 1861 and was assigned to Company D, 23rd New York Infantry, US Army, and was discharged in January 1863, following the loss of his left arm at Fredericksburg. In 1865 he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant with the Veteran Reserve Corps and continued serving in the US Army until retiring at the brevet rank of captain in December 1870. He died at the age of 74. His Medal of Honor citation reads: “For distinguished gallantry in actions September 17 to 13 December 1862, while attached to Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery. Private Hogarty lost his left arm at Fredericksburg.”
