Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company G, 113th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 27, 1863. His citation reads “Voluntarily acted as a fireman on a steam tug which ran the blockade and passed the batteries under a heavy fire”. His Medal was issued on July 8, 1896. He was one of six 113th Illinois soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Sergeant John S. Darrough, Private Newton D. Gould, Sergeant James Henry, Corporal Elisha Johns, and Private Jacob C. Miller).
