Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Sergeant in Company A, 49th Indiana Infantry for action on May 17, 1863 at Black River Bridge, Mississippi. His citation reads “Voluntarily led the company in a charge and was the first to enter the enemy’s works, taking a number of prisoners.” He did not receive his Medal until February 12, 1894.
